South Salt Lake has achieved national recognition for its dedication to fostering a compassionate community environment. The city is featured in the January/February 2026 issue of Good Housekeeping magazine, in a story that highlights its official designation as a "City of Kindness."

“Here good deeds are a daily habit,” the story said of South Salt Lake City.

South Salt Lake is one of only four communities nationwide—and the only one in Utah—to receive this spotlight for integrating kindness into city infrastructure, schools and business culture. The others are Fort Collins, Colorado; Murray, Kentucky; and Silverwood, California.

For the past year the city has partnered with "One Kind Act a Day," a local nonprofit founded by the Semnani Family Foundation to create a safe, welcoming and respected environment for all residents amid national contention.

Beyond this initiative, the foundation is known for establishing the Maliheh Free Clinic in Salt Lake City to provide healthcare to the uninsured.

Through its efforts, the city has been certified by the foundation as a “City of Kindness.”

“One of the most important messages I want to share with residents is that when we create a community of kindness, we create a safe space for everyone,” Mayor Cherie Wood said in a press release. “Let’s be the kind of neighbors and people we want in our community.”

“When the world seems contentious it is inspiring to see communities, like South Salt Lake, make a conscientious focus on kindness,” said One Kind Act a Day Director Mason Bennett in the same press release.

The "City of Kindness" initiative has included implementation of kindness themes into the annual Mural Fest, specifically involving youth from Promise South Salt Lake to paint murals and the distribution of free "City of Kindness" yard signs available at City Hall and through city delivery.

“Driving around and seeing the yard signs in residents' yards is one of the metrics I can really see, and how it's helped...who knows how many people [who] can walk by the mural and see a fun kindness mural,” city spokesperson Joseph Danes said. “We are very committed to that work.”

The city has also implemented the "Kindness in Action" program, which allows employees to nominate coworkers for witnessed acts of kindness. The initiative aims to inspire intentional acts of kindness daily, not just large gestures, Danes said.

The magazine highlighted the city because it shows how kindness initiatives are becoming a crucial component of a community’s quality of life and social fabric.

The city plans to continue this focus. During the upcoming State of the City address on March 16, South Salt Lake will present its first "Kindness in Action Employee of the Year" award. Residents are encouraged to visit www.thepowerofkind.org to take the kindness pledge and contribute to the growing movement.
